Knowledge and attitudes of dental personnel regarding biosafety

Infection continues to be one of the most critical problems in healthcare service worldwide. Infection prevention and cross-contamination control are essential to providing a safe environment for patients and healthcare workers within healthcare settings generally and, more specifically, dental practices.

Infections can be transmitted in the dental office through several routes, including direct contact with blood, oral fluids, or other secretions; indirect contact with contaminated instruments, surgical equipment or environmental surfaces; or contact with airborne contaminants present in droplets or aerosols of oral and respiratory fluids. The risks of disease transmission may vary depending on the susceptibility of the host, the virulence and infectivity of the organism, the dose or number of organisms, the period of exposure (time interval) and finally the mode of transmission.

Thus, it is essential to understand the disease processes, transmission routes, methods to control transmission and implement appropriate safety and infection control measures during practice to break the chain of infection in the dental context. This work also addresses a scientific investigation in which the effect of an Update Program on knowledge about biosafety in the staff of the Dentistry service of the REDESS of a city in Peru was determined.
