Community participation and the infant mortality rate caused by pneumonia

Childhood pneumonia is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in children under 5 years of age worldwide, and its impact is especially pronounced in geographic regions and communities with challenging socio-environmental conditions. This study focuses on the Province of Lampa, located in the Department of Puno, in the highland region of Peru, a geographically remote area characterized by extreme climatic conditions and a population predominantly of Quechua origin. These geographic and cultural factors have contributed to the persistence of pneumonia as a major health problem in this region. The research addresses topics such as the situation and socio-environmental conditions of the province, the epidemiology of childhood pneumonia in Peru, community participation in health development, primary health care, health promotion, the levels and functions of the community participation in health, the process and purpose of said participation, the instruments available, the role of community leaders, childhood pneumonia, its definition, symptoms, risk factors and classification, as well as the infant mortality rate, its definition and statistics in Latin America and Peru.
